How to sell street art
There is a busy secondary market for street art – but the way you sell decides how much you actually receive. Prepare these points before you contact anyone.
Before you sell
- Get a realistic value range from current auction results, not asking prices.
- Gather the paperwork: certificate, invoice, original packaging.
- Take good photos of the front, the signature and number, and the back.
- Note the condition honestly – buyers will check.
Where to sell
Auction houses reach many buyers and publish results; they charge the seller a commission and fees, and major houses only accept well-documented works. Specialist dealers buy directly or sell on commission – quick, but they need a margin. Online platforms and print marketplaces can work for mid-priced editions; check fees, verification and who handles shipping and insurance.
Avoid these mistakes
- Selling to the first buyer who offers cash without knowing the value.
- Sending the work before payment has cleared.
- Reframing, cleaning or «restoring» the print yourself.
- Selling a Banksy without a Pest Control certificate as «genuine».
